vehicle accidentEstablishing “Why” Since 1966

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there are over 10 million car accidents that occur in the United States each year. You most likely drive past these car accidents frequently. The cause of these accidents are not always clear and may be difficult to analyze. Fortunately biomechanics can be used to understand the impact accidents have on the human body.

Biomechanics can be explained as the study of the structure and function of biological systems such as humans, animals, and plants by using mechanical methods and engineering sciences. Engineers are able to examine and explain through a mechanical perspective why injuries and fatalities occur by using applied mechanics such as kinesiology, and musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, and orthopedic biomechanics.

The investigators understand the force that is applied to the human body and the body’s natural response. The information is then used to reconstruct the accident to gain insight into impact severity and other factors. Biomechanical analysis provides the link between accident reconstruction and injury causation.

The experts at Forensic Analysis & Engineering help establish why an injury or fatality occurred by using biomechanical analysis. Our knowledge in the areas of structural analysis, continuum mechanics, mechanism analysis, kinematics and dynamics help determine the cause of the injuries in relation to the accident. The understanding of human anatomy, physiology, and injury tolerance enable our investigators to reconstruct aspects of the crash such as vehicle speed, acceleration / deceleration, direction of force and angle of impact. Biomechanical analysis explains why and how injuries occur, and how to prevent future injuries.
