The 2014 Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to Nov. 30. So far the season has been relatively calm. But no one knows what Mother Nature has in store for the rest of the season. Each year devastating winds and relentless rain pounds the east coast, Gulf of Mexico, and Caribbean causing millions to lose power and thousands to lose their homes.
More than 6.5 million homes along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts are at risk of hurricane storm surge damage, with New York City having the most homes and value at risk, according to a new report released last week by a company that analyzes property values. The study by CoreLogic found that the vulnerable homes represent 1.5 trillion in potential reconstruction costs, with nearly two thirds 986 billion of that risk concentrated in 15 metro areas. Thus, no matter where you live, it is best to be prepared when a storm is approaching!
First you must know the warning signals. A hurricane watch indicates the possibility that a region could experience hurricane conditions within 48 hours. A hurricane warning indicates that sustained winds of at least 74 mph are expected within 36 hours. Don’t wait until you are in a hurricane watch or hurricane warning to get prepared. Here are a few ways to protect you and your loved ones from the unpredictability of these devastating storms.
- Know evacuation routes and locations of official shelters.
- Have a list of pet friendly hotels along the route.
- Buy emergency supplies such as: flashlights and batteries.
- Leave early because traffic will be a major problem.
- Have an emergency supply of medicine, food, and water.
- Cover all windows and doors with shielding materials.
- Trim trees and shrubbery so they don’t damage your home.
- Clean your gutters and downspouts.
- Gather important documents including insurance policies.
- Fuel and service family vehicles.
- Ensure you have extra cash on hand.
- Bring in light objects and secure or tie down lawn furniture.
- Stay informed by tracking storm’s projected paths.
